Topic

Structural inequalities intersect with social, health, economic and community inequities and impact on people’s mental health and social and emotional wellbeing. Inequalities relate to but are not limited by access, wealth, available resources and power, and are reinforced through structural mechanisms related to policies, laws, everyday practices and systems of care.

The Whose Care? Our Care! project is a Medical Research Future Fund Million Minds Mental Health Grant (MRF2032333; 2024-2029) that works with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, LGBTIQA+SB and multicultural, culturally diverse communities and, rural and remote communities across more than 35 Medicare Mental Health Centres (adults and kids), Safe Spaces and Safe Havens, Community Led Safe Spaces, Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals and a First Nations led and governed model.

The aim is to co-develop multi-level collective strategies to address structural inequalities using a participatory ecosystems framework. In doing so the project is mapping culturally responsive care, lived experience integration and accessibility and communication across the different settings to explore experiences of care and what matters in care delivery to address structural inequalities. 

The project is a co-partnership with service providers Neami National, Stride, Roses in the Ocean and Ampe-kenhe Ahelhe Children’s Ground Central Australia.

About the speakers

Professor Victoria Palmer

Professor Palmer holds a PhD in applied ethics and is Professor of Co-Design & Primary Care Mental Health.  She is one of three Co-Directors of the ALIVE National Centre and is the lead investigator for the Whose Care? Our Care! project. Victoria leads a number of flagship research activities of the Centre including the development of the Preventive Experiential Arts and Cultural Evidence platform with Aboriginal Co-Design Lead Phillip Orcher Muruwori/Gumbaynggirr building on a cultural protocol and method designed by Orcher called Bigaagarri (danger, keep back) to support holistic health.

Dr Matthew Lewis

Dr Lewis has a PhD in psychology, and has been involved in mental health research for over 20 years across a range of settings and disciplines.  Matt has been working at the ALIVE National Centre from its inception and has been engaged across projects relating to physical and mental health, understanding the implementation of new models of mental health and wellbeing care and now Whose Care?  Our Care!. 

VTMH webinars are open to individuals, from all disciplines and working in all sectors, who are based in Australia and interested in diversity and mental health.
